How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh for Longer
There's nothing quite like receiving a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers. At Fleming Florist, we source our blooms directly from the finest Dutch growers in Holland, so you can be sure you're getting the very best. But how do you make sure they last as long as possible once they arrive home?
Here are our top tips for keeping your flowers fresh and vibrant for longer.
1. Trim the Stems
As soon as you receive your flowers, trim about 2–3cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and helps your flowers drink more efficiently.
2. Use Clean Water
Always place your flowers in a clean vase with fresh, cool water. Change the water every two days to prevent bacteria from building up, which can shorten the life of your blooms.
3. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline
Any leaves sitting in the water will rot quickly and introduce bacteria. Strip away any foliage that would sit below the waterline before placing your flowers in the vase.
4. Keep Them Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight
Flowers last longer in cool conditions. Keep your bouquet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fruit bowls — ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can cause flowers to age faster.
5. Use Flower Food
If your bouquet comes with a sachet of flower food, use it! It contains the right balance of nutrients and antibacterial agents to keep your flowers looking their best.
